My Birthday Dream

My Birthday Dream

A Story by Meshalini
"

August 13 is my birthday...

"
It was the morning of August 13,
I was sleeping and I heard some strange noises.
When I opened my eyes, I saw my family around me
And wished me "Happy birthday Mesha"
I was quite surprised with that.
They gave me the birthday presents
And took me to one of my favorite places.
We were having a great time together.
But I suddenly startled from sleep.
And I found myself lying in bed.
I was confused and asked to my cat who was sleeping next to me
"What happens to me now?"
But after a few minutes,
I realized that the wishes, presents and the place are appeared in my dream.
I was sad and disappointed because it never happens to me in real,
But as everyone knows, I love dreaming.

Thank you so much..
The twist in this poem really surprised me. I thought this was going to be a happy poem, but then the ending turned everything around. It reminded me of similar dreams I had when I was younger, when I would wake up and feel so sad.

I thought that this was going to be a really happy poem. But the twist in the end gave me a bit of a shock.

I totally agree with you, sometimes I love my dreams more than reality. When we start start loving more we start expecting more..... i really loved how you displayed your imagination in this poem! :D

Taking a tiny story and breaking it into lines doesn't make it poetic. Poetry is so much more then informing a reader. The goal is to give the reader an emotional experience, not informational. You should read lots of poetry, of all types, to see what pleases you.

For unstructured poetry that pulls the reader in, try Billy Collens. His work will evoke a response in you, and make you say, "That's such a pretty thought," or, "That is so sad," or funny, or...

For structured poetry that's rousing, try, The Cremation of Sam McGee:

For a smile seek out Ogden Nash. For bite try Dorothy Parker. There's a world of poetry out there, and it's worth digging into.
