Love Poem for a Darkening Age

Love Poem for a Darkening Age

A Poem by Michael W. Farrelly

Her atomic structure for a billion years
rolled and tumbled through the void
toward the catastrophy that is I.
Particles charged and ionized within
our universes, drawing each other into orbit
and our lips together. Entwined divinely
in the motion and the sweat that it is love
we sought a purity in our corruption
and strove toward nothing less than a climax
to make life after forever worthless
but for the taste of memory,
so sweet. One tear of hers
worth more than all moments that I have lived,
and I have drawn too many lifetimes
of cries from her heart, this demon-natured
lover I am: content only

with the value of the ashes I leave.
Why would she have thought her heart
or self different from any other
I have tasted and burned?
She truly believed, so wrongly,
that my love for her would protect her
from me..................
                              ........................from what I am:
a dragon
decked falsley
of tender colours
unable

or unwilling
to control
such a terrible hunger.

Again, so very well done! This reminds me of Notes From Underground, when the underground man rejects the prostitute who loves him because, well, he can only be who he is, and that is a contradiction. Half of the time he feels he must destroy everything around him. That's the feeling I get from the speaker, anyway.

Love the diction, makes for great imagery.

Have a nice day!
