A Chapter by MightyMouse

Jake is laying on a bed next to the door. His face is skinnier than the last time Waya had seen him, and dark circles line his eyes. He really doesn’t look very good. Waya kneels beside him grasping his small fragile hand and rubs his head. “Hey, Jakey. I heard you haven’t been eating.” He says. “How’s my little dinosaur going to grow big and strong if he won’t eat?” Jake doesn’t move so Waya looks to Milo for help. Milo pulls a stethoscope from around his neck and uses it to listen to Jake’s heart. “His heart is weak, but his breathing sounds fine. It isn’t pneumonia at least. But I think we should get him back to the city. I have IV supplies there. He’s dehydrated. Keep talking to him. He’ll wake up eventually. At least that’s the theory anyways.” Waya nods. He wonders if the doctor is just telling him that so he doesn’t worry.

He picks Jake up and takes him to the truck. Sebastian follows with a pillow and a small blanket. He hands them to Waya and steps back. “Thank you for taking care of my brother.”

“You came back to him in a coma and you’re thanking me? I thought you’d be irate. I thought Pip was going to strangle me.” Waya laughs though his laugh lacks any real joy considering the current situation. “You did what you could for him. I’m not angry with you.” Sebastian nods once and looks back towards the mobile home, clearly uncomfortable. “Why don’t you go find out what their plan is while I get him tucked in back here.” Waya suggests. Sebastian walks away without looking back, leaving Waya alone with Jake. As he makes Jake comfortable in the back of the pick up truck, he tells him a few poems. “The armor of my heart, the light in my tunnel, the art on my canvas, the sway of my move, the rich of my riches, you are my brother, and I am your keeper. I know not of the love of a benevolent God; The power to save a fallen son. I only know of the love that I have, for I am my brother's keeper. A brother is a friend given by nature, a lifetime companion; A bond of blood. He is my first hero; He is my first friend. He will always be my brother until the very end. Brothers in blood share more than just blood. They share the experience of being a son. They share the same rules that they learned to abide, and a sense of belonging that can’t be denied. A brother is a person; he is his own man. He makes his mistakes; like every man makes. He's taught me great lessons which outshine pain. That's why I love him for his own sake. What brother's seek together, they will surely find. I am the voice that will always remind. I am the hand that leads when he is blind. For a brother never leaves his brother behind.” Waya covers Jake with a blanket. “Did you make that up?” Pip asks coming up behind him.

Waya smiles. “No they’re just a couple of poems I used to tell him when he was a baby. It used to make him fall asleep.”

“Really? My brother told me he used to make me fall asleep by hanging me by my toes from the ceiling fan, though I’m pretty sure he was joking.” Waya laughs so hard his sides hurt. He grabs them and takes several deep breaths. “Thanks for that. I haven’t laughed like that in a while.”

“You’re welcome. We’re just going to get the food we can fit in the truck tonight. We’re going to send some people for the rest of it tomorrow. You’re going to have to go with them since you know how to get here. I’d send Sebastian, or Milo, but Sebastian is hurt and Milo is the only doctor we have.”

“I understand. Maybe I can get Jake to wake up tonight. Then I won’t have to worry about him so much while I’m gone.”

“Good luck with that.” Pip says as she walks back towards the mobile home. Waya glances back at Jake then follows her.

They fill the back of the truck with hundreds of cans of chicken noodle soup and drive away.
