Flatline

Flatline

A Poem by Theo Ratcliffe

I saw myself on the operation table,

Nothing but a pale ghost,

All colour drained from my body,

Screams were coming from the nurse in the viewing room above,

Muffled.

Eyes, red and swollen

Checks, stained with tears

Only she cared

Only she wanted me to live

Bleeding continued,

Breaths got shorter,

I could feel everything.

Death was present,

And I

Was on the edge of it.

Yelling and panic set in,

Surgeons gave up,

While bleeding continued.

Tears in their eyes.

Darkness crept in,

My vision fading

Everything moved slow.

The nurse ran into the room,

Surgeons defeated,

Their bloody hands grabbing her,

While she fought her way toward me,

Toward my cold body.

Those who had not given up,

And those who had,

Hope,

Yelled at her to leave.

I felt it,

My heart stop beating,

The last breath of air escape my body.

All while the monitor,

Showed nothing

But;

A flat line

This was my end

And I smiled

I

Was finally free.

This reminds me of the book/movie If I Stay.
Sometimes when we are in darkness we can't help but imagine having that out-of-body experience and think we'd choose to leave, or "be free," as you have mentioned. Always remember your life is something worth holding onto.
