Melancholy Tales

Melancholy Tales

A Poem by Maddi

The starlight breaks the sky into a thousand shards,
Each one more shiny than before,
Slivers of glassy light rain into the garden,
Cushioned by tranquil shadows.
The garden is steeped in darkness.
But in the bright star light,
The Shadow still looks up and smiles,
And tells herself the wonderful stories,
The Moon told her.
A melancholy breeze murmurs through,
The remnants of dusk.
And The Shadow wishes she could see the moon,
On this cloudy night.
She sleeps in the autumn foliage,
Wishing she could be with him,
Like the lucky stars.
The Shadow is not evil,
She is gentle,
Benevolent even.
All she wants is to be with him...
She is in love,
A shadow in love?
Reader have you ever heard something so bizarre?
Just because a shadow is in love,
Does that not make it real love?
But if you wish hard enough,
Maybe it could still happen.
The Shadow sighs,
And tells herself another story.
Then the moon bursts from the clouds,
Clear and bright and beautiful.
"Tell me another story!" The Shadow exclaims.
And The Moon begins another wondrous tale,
About the life he watches from so far away,
Yearning to be a part of.
But all too soon,
The sun peeks above the horizon,
The Moon will be gone soon
And The Shadow,
Well.
She will always be waiting,
Deep under the fiery autumn foliage.
But until she sees the moon next,
She will just continue to tell herself,
More of his,
Melancholy tales.
