Perseverance

Never give up… Never give in…

With determination and perseverance you’ll win.

Boredom saps your drive and makes you lame;

You’ll never lie down to win your game.

Stand fast, play hard, loyal and true…

Only perseverance can carry you through.

Wildness and abandon will take you away;

From your right path you’ll be led astray.

Steadfast and thoughtful you always must be.

Persevere in the right and stand tall as a tree.

Self-serving and callous will gain you no true friend;

Alone and struggling may be your end.

Choose loyalty and honor with all whom you know;

Persevere in good company, your best character show.

The world will carry you along and diminish…

Your every word and deed darkly tarnish.

Persevere in the race and the hope of God’s Grace

Will complete and assure His Grace shines from your face.

It felt to me like a statement of intent the sort of this that coorporations will put on their websites to convince one and all that they are doing the right thing. I hope this does not come out as offensive. What I really mean is that to me there is an intrinsic amount of "demagogical" stereotype associated with this kind of work. Nothing to do with the intentions of the writer whatsover is just how public perception will digest it.

Thank you for your critique. I can see your point and hope this wouldn't be used for that kind of empty corporate propaganda. This really was written for my 10 year old son, inspired by the scripture, which also happened to be from his Sunday school lesson that week. But, he did roll his eyes when he read it, naturally.

I really like the repetition of the word "persevere" in this. It really gives the poem power and drives home the meaning behind it.

:D Ten-year old boys… they're smelly and they're loud… they never stop moving… they're stinky… mine never stops talking (I think there's something to Ford Prefect's observation that their brains might start working if they stopped talking)… they're really quite odiferous… they know too much… they're malodorous… they don't know enough to know they don't know enough… and they're noisome.

Say, that looks like the beginnings of new poem! :D

He'll laugh about it, mostly. He has a fairly expansive sense of humor. He even makes up his own jokes, sometimes, that are quite amusing. Like the following:

After each statement, answer "I'm a man."

You come home after a hard week of work.
You go out to a bar.
You meet a hot girl.
You take her home with you.
You get her in bed.
She whispers…
