Scars to your beautiful

Scars to your beautiful

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers
"

...domestic abuse

"

Scars to your beautiful

the black and blue

is camouflaged

underneath

a bed of lies

no one sees

the true facade

there are scars

to your beautiful.

I once knew this beautiful man...he honored me and my scarred dilapidated body. Adorned me with desire like I was a goddess. I thought he was perfect. He vanished. I met him sometime later and I realized that I had not looked deep enough. He was still beautiful but beneath it were scars that not even my talents could heal. This poem reminds me....scars are both horrid and beautiful. Blessing my friend...my scars to your beautiful...

You’ve managed to knit together a perfectly contained doily of contrast – ugly & beauty. Excellent word crafting to describe a curse that’s never-ending, even after leaving the abusive situation, such scars live on (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Such a strong and poignant write, my friend! I could feel this one to the very bones of my being, and even they were washed clean and white by the starkness of the implications given here. Abuse is such a painful thing to endure, whether it be physical or emotional (because I have see people screwed up just as badly by emotional abuse). You have created something so very thought provoking, it will stay with me all day. Thank you.

Sometimes, all a poem really needs is the acknowledgement from a friend...thank you for that, Traci!
You are so true, but also remember that not only adults, but I would conjecture even more children are the subject of abuse. Unfortunately after having taught for quite a few years I have met more than just a few of those young victims.
Thank you for giving voice to them also.

Believe me, I know what you mean, I've seen both.
Aloha Kelly, it's not really conjecture though. Poetic words exposing the truth. Very powerful. Izzy

Thank you, Izzy. I just didn't want people to think it was something I was actually going through.

'Ae I understand, and you're welcome.
Force used and then hidden or regretted until next time is never right. What is right is the way this beautifully poignant write wrings the dirt out of the rag that is violent relationships.

Thank you for a most in depth perspective, Ken!
And the beautiful often masks the scars, sigh...no words could sum up such a poignant topic yet you have as always wrapped grace into your expression x

Your kindness overwhelms me...thank you, Poppy!
when we put an end to patriarchal social norms and see women as fully human as well as no longer see "might makes right" as the moral code, then will the camouflage be torn away from violence against women or violence in any form... I wish your poem was only "conjecture" Kelly... humanity does not have to live this way and your poem in shining an artistic light of this horror is part of ending it... much thanks for doing this... but as important as our pens are, we also need activity and refuse to allow this to go on any longer...

I can feel the weight of your words, Curt...thank you for speaking them! Many blessings to you!
Domestic abuse will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime and on average leads to two women being murdered each week and 30 men per year. It also is responsible for more repeat victims than any other crime (on average there will have been 35 assaults before a victim calls the police).
Your short, but poignantly observant composition, highlights the sercrecy surrounding the crime! Good work …

spot on ..straight shots to the heart of abuse ..well said my friend ..into me ol' library it goes ..a very important issue ...always ..in my mind anyway .. it is so prevalent .. i don't know what i would do if it were my own who were suffering .. a hardy lesson with a bat to the knees might do the trick ... but i doubt it ...abusers are murderers that destroy spirit and heart .. so they can kick the rags of us around at leisure ..life sentencing a must for them says i! powerful poem Kelly!
