Dying of Thirst

Dying of Thirst

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Dying of thirst

His lips placidly conformed

to the bottle’s annular opening,

his thirst

momentarily quenched

as he grasped the curvature

of its tapered neck.

He consumed the malted liquor,

fervently licking the heady delight

repeatedly  from his lips.

Just once, she wished

he would take her

with the same

unchaste provocation…

her insatiable need,

momentarily quenched.

This is so powerful. The poster child of "show instead of tell" when it comes to the old saying about not being able to compete with the bottle as the steady partner, instead of one's beloved in the flesh. Your descriptions are intensely vivid & perfectly sensuous as a counterpoint to the deep sadness this situation truly represents! *sigh!* Well done snippet of a sad life full of contrasts (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

My pleasure🌹
This was a sensual read for sure! All unbeknown to the malt liquor consumer? That my dear Kelly, was a sad turn of events for both parties, I'm sure! Nice job here! I loved it. Until we meet again Kelly.

Thank you, John. I am most assured we will!
The detail is what helps to make the end an image one can't forget. The relationship between that image and her desire raises the pulse to anyone with an imagination.

Always a good poem from you Kelly.

...thanks, Cassie! I won't tell anyone if you don't! ; )
Excellent metaphor! Such sadness in your words, reminiscent of so many toxic relationships that leave one feeling this way.

Thank you kindly, Ted!
Too many sexual metaphors previously commented upon in earlier reviews. It's an abusive relationship, he finding his joy in the bottomless bottles he no doubt consumes daily, and she addicted to her desires from a fountain that will never wet her lips.

I come and go, like a lonely wind. :-)
What a shame that a woman finds herself in need of love that is instead being devoted to liquor. Kelly - surely there must be better for her.

Take care - Dave
