Oh Spring Do Not Tarry Long

Oh Spring Do Not Tarry Long

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Oh Spring, Do Not Tarry Long

Oh spring,

do not tarry long

for I have shed

my winter’s coat

for the rapture of

a robin’s song,

for the nightingale

and the mourning dove

to coo, night long.

Oh spring,

            Oh spring

do not tarry long!

oh Spring pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaase do not tarry ;) i join you in the chorus Kelly ... i get so excited whenever i see that you have posted anew! and never am disappointed ...i am so fortunate to have fled the north; our Ozark Spring began in Jan. as the crocus pushed green shoots above ground ..i feel you; as i lived most of my life in the bitter winter winds of the upper midwest ... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh ... and surviving the Spring Tease was probably the hardest part of the whole winter thing ... its like enough is enough right!? i just got through taking Beauregard out to do his morning business (6 AM) as the moment was just before morning light and the whippoorwills were trilling i thought of how i love to listen to them .. and the morning doves' songs ... both are so cool to me as i can at least make an attempt at imitating their tunes ... (usually making them fly away; i confess) but i keep trying ;) great pic! love your plea! so joined at the hip with you on this one Legs!

Many thanks, Fabian!
An intense longing for spring and the pleasure of birdsong after a cold winter. Lovely to read, and your accompanying image suits perfectly. We have a glorious spring day here and the blackbirds are singing as I respond to you. I love words like tarry. Old fashioned and rarely used, but so poetic. Thank you Kelly.

I know how you feel, Christine...I love using rarely used words. So happy you enjoyed this!
This is the sort of poem that stands out in a poet's work and is taught in schools, that people love to memorize. I could almost cry with yearning for these birds to appear. We all ache for spring to come, and it always takes too long. The ransom paid (the winter's coat) just makes the wait more unbearable.

...seeing you has truly made my day...thank you, Poppy!
beautiful, simply beautiful.
my spring if ever fleeting, mowed the lawn and got a sunburn 2 days ago, scraped 4 inches of snow off my sidewalks yesterday, 70 degrees today.
I stay up late wondering what tomorrow brings.

Kelly, the beautiful painting is enhanced by your delicate classical words and romantic font...she waits with baited breath for Nature’s serenade of Springtime....as do we all right now! Graceful form, flow, rhyme. Lilting and lovely poem my friend.
