For My Grandfather

For My Grandfather

A Poem by Neville
"

very few deserve to be forgotten... this one certainly does not..

"

For My Grandfather

Forty two years ago today

We all wept

Because we loved him so

And because he never made

His one hundred

Despite falling short of that

Personal goal

He always seemed to me

So very old indeed

But the fact is he was

Only seventy two all out

And is now forever sleeping

Yesterday

For the first time ever

I found the gray slate plaque

That served to mark

That he had ever been here and

To record his passing

For all that

Or rather for the lack of it

He was a great man

Who did so much more than

Merely live and die

He must never be forgot

Edward V Pettitt

Passed away 10th July 1976

Aged 72 years…..

Nice, I am envious. All my grandparents did nothing but say I deserved the sexual and physical abuse for being a child out of wedlock. I am jealous of you.

tis a very sad and cruel world out there....
He was young when he passed away, but you still remember him and that means that there is so much more than a grave stone to commemorate his time on earth. Tomorrow is 24 years since my Daddy passed away....we remember and the memories live on. A warmly emotional write, Neville. You obviously loved your grandfather very much. Lydi**

Bless ya... a lovely thought and kind words indeed... Neville
It is so fitting to pay tribute to our grandparents, especially if we were fortunate enough to have had a close relationship with them. This is a fine tribute to your Grandad, who made his mark on you and you have good memories of the time you shared. 72 isn't old by today's standards. I am looking at the date he died, July 1976. I also lost my paternal Grandad in July 1976 but he was two years older. He was the one who introduced me to poetry at nine years old. Grandfathers can wield huge influence over us, even when they are gone. The gray slate plaque might mark his passing, but he lives on in you Neville.

Thank you Christine.......... Neville
Grandfathers, the good ones, are so very influential in our lives. I often stop and think, "what would grandpa do?" It sounds like you had that kind of grandfather too. :)
