An Autumn Harvest

An Autumn Harvest

A Poem by Neville
"

On a good day every vessel shall be filled to more than overflowing & at the end of a good day there be much rejoicing in the fields......

"

An Autumn Harvest

Come hither and tarry

Mid these wind fallen apples

Come hither and tarry

While they’re strewn all around

Come hither and gather

Them swiftly my lover

Before they do bruise on the

Parched autumn ground

Use your pinny and shawl

Your basket and boots lass

Come gather wind fallen apples

As they do lay all around

Use your hat and your dress

Your coat and my barrow

And fill to the top girl

The old cider maker’s press

In this drought in this valley

Come hither and tarry

Come gather wind fallen apples

And true….

Then stack em all proud

And pile em all neat girl

To slake the hunger and thirst

Of they who work in the fields gall

Then come hither and tarry

Mid these wind fallen apples

Come hither and dally

So we may one day yet marry

In an orchard in autumn

Just ripe for the picking

Sweet wind fallen apples

And so bloomin true ……

Ah, the softness of words from another era. Pinny made me think of my dear departed, flour coated gran, Sultana filled baked apple smells announcing that she knew we were coming and mouth watering at the thought of it, with real home made custard that has sadly fallen out of fashion.
She used us as her garden herders too, picking up leaves, twigs and those brave fallen apples who just couldnt waot to be picked.

Makes me think of my days in New Jersey when the fall meant hayrides and McIntosh crisp air. Those were the days. There is a delightful old fashioned romantic feeling to this one, Neville. I liked the repetition. Lydi**

Then I am......
I live in apple country, too. Guess that's why they called it New England.
Haven't heard the phrase "pinney and shawl" since my gran was alive, although I do employ myself making shawls during the winter months.
Hey, Neville, ye've gotta stop losin' yer head.
(I know ye have, so don't bother sayin' otherwise. I've seen yer picture)...
Oh, and I really liked your poem!

too bad we don't have autumn here.. but then it reminds me of falling leaves and when summer is gone.. the start of fall and simplifies a restart of something beautiful to come

another beautiful & happy thought to add to my collection.. thank you sette.... Neville
Reminds me of the sort of scene I would expect to find in a Thomas Hardy classic. Dorset/Somerset both beautiful counties, but Somerset famous for its cider. Your lines have an old worldly feel and are song like. Of course with cider comes much singing. Nicely done Neville.

Thank you Sir.. Much appreciated too, I might add.. Neville
This sounds and moves to me like a song. Really like the rhythm on this one and I just love the fall season. We have quite a few of orchards here in Wisconsin too.

I feel very young and whispy in your Autumn Nev. The world doesnt seem to bother me here as I walk along filling my satchel...shining them on my skirts...skipping every few steps....humming old songs...looking for the butterflies.
