My Dream Room

My Dream Room

A Poem by Neytri
"

This is how my life works, this is what always happens to me.

"
I want my dream room
To be coloured black, red and white;
But my Dad says not to use colours too bright.
He wants it to be painted light blue or green hue
But how do I make him understand-
"My age and opinion, are not like you!"

I want my dream room
To be both cheerful and alive;
Which would always encourage me,
To go ahead in life.
Photos of my idols and friends
Is what I want to put up;
But my Dad says-
"On your walls, you're not allowed anything to stick up!"

I want my dream room
To have curtains of colours red and black;
But my Mom says-
"A soothing effect does light coloured curtains have!"

To whatever I say,
There's always an objection;
There's always someone or the other
To put an end to my expectations.

But now I surrender my room
To be designed according to my family;
Cause its time for me
Not to make demands silly.
For now I know that understanding
Is something which is needed forever-
To bind my family together,
Happily ever after.

The poem begins with a youthful assertion and ends on a mature understanding,having seen that a room is part of a larger home.

The choice of the three colours resonates with the three 'gunas' - tamas,rajas and sattwa - which added another depth and level to the poem

Nicely presented a family issue which may be seen in all cultures.
I understood your case and felt very happy that you honored the opinions of elders.
It may be an example of practicing democracy in the family.

Yes, till an extent... :)
Our choices and our path can be different than our loved ones. I can keep their view in mind also.at our age we all feel someway or another this way.some parents are over protective and some cant understand their child. Have faith in you and them. Because at the end family is all that matters. Lovely write..keep writing:)

I was totally like this when I was your age. But you seem to see that the world is bigger than you and me. There is so much pain and suffering out there in the world that our everyday rebellions and battles are nothing in comparison. I'm sure that you hear this all the time, but you are so very young. There is nothing you can't accomplish! Go find your passion and live it.
If poetry is your passion then learn the art, read poetry by everybody, find the style that resonates with you. Plath or ezra or even byron. Understand meters and scales, play with words and turn them around. Like another reviewer said, forget rhyming. I know that's what they teach us in India but that's not poetry at its core. See Shakespeare and how he said things hidden behind other things. I'm happy to help with any support you might need.

Okay Ipshi. Thank you
When writing rhyming poetry there is a lot more too it than simply choosing words that rhyme. The words must have a natural rhythm, a steady beat, that enhances the words. And once begun, like any drum track, it must continue, with each line maintaining the cadence.

For a really good overview on why, and how, visit Amazon and search for Stephen Fry's The Ode Less Traveled. The excerpt will teach you a great deal about poetry, and language.

Thank you for stopping by and reviewing.
This poem tells a story, not of conflict between parents and children but of harmony. In a sense the child/teenager has given in to the parents in a loving way, not chose to express themselves but to do as their parents expect them to. It is a way to keep the family united. This is an expression of unconditional love by the child/teenager. And it shows great respect to the parents.
What a wonderful theme this poem has. It tells a story and gets the message across.
I always believe that poetry comes from the heart and is an expression of ones feelings. You must have a heart of gold.

Thank you Sir. I'm glad you like it.
Understandings change with maturity...the stubbornness fades away gradually and that is life. You have created a marvellous painting on the huge canvas of life with your simple words. The rhythm of the poem is excellent and so is your style...

Loved it

I saw a youthful spirit being slowly gradually and methodically doused. 'Tradition' is the song that 'Tevye' sings early on in 'Fiddler on the Roof' and yet what was there before tradition? Many injustices are carried out in the name of Tradition.
You pen screams with rebellion.
Bravo !
