Dave Verralls RPV*****A Poem by Norman223
Dave Verall is a well known Australian songwriter, ecologist and naturalist who conducts trips around the outback of South Australia. This is an account of one of those "expeditions"
T'was on a night excursion
With a naturalist called Dave Verall
He drove a coach with a large searchlight
So we could see the feral
Wombats on nocturnal jaunts
Roaming in their natural haunts
We sought them here,
We sought them there
We sought those wombats everywhere.
Dave’s searchlight traversed every bump
But only one of them was a wombat’s rump.
We did much better with kangaroo
And even saw a rabbit or two
And some gleaming specks, which to our surprise
Were assured by Dave to be spiders’ eyes.
Then some of us watched with some unease
As Dave drove with his head at ninety degrees
To the road, till someone yelled from the back
“Look out Dave, you’re running out of track”.
And then he startled all of us
Shouting “What was that?” as he reversed the bus
And there, lying on a bale of hay
A toy silver plastic robot lay.
As an ecologist, Dave was faithfully writing
Details of every nocturnal sighting.
But under which genus do you classify
Roboticum Plasticus Verallii*****

AboutAt the age of 86, I enjoy the challenge of writing, as an optimistic attempt to delay senility. However, I admit to being a victim of the "generation gap",which means that I am not always in tune wit.. more..
