Thinking of "U"

Thinking of "U"

A Poem by Norman223

Up to now, I’d never thought of “u”

With undue sentiment

But doing so has brought some thoughts to mind

Of how it’s sound can be cunningly bent.

As a short vowel in “cup”, it’s still unique

Which is something I can’t refute

But in long vowel form, it could be replaced

(Double “O” or ” EW “ would suit.)

It even emulates “ER” as well

As in murder, churlish and purse

But also in silence, it slyly hides ,

Which is even much more perverse.

For it’s not even sounded in words like “disguise”

And even”sanguine,“cough” or “quell”.

But in English, unfortunately, we have to keep ”u”

Or abandon our “Q” as well.

Being from a country (along with Canada) that uses a number of extra useless intriguing "u" letters next to the necessary "o" letters of many words . . . colours instead of colors, etc . . . I was expecting this to be part of your diatribe here! However you have covered much ground in dissecting the uses of "u" . . . this kinda reminds me of Jacob, who also likes to wax poetic about things pertaining to language. I think your examples are the strongest part of this explanation -- good choices! I've missed you lately, but didn't want to rattle your cage & impart any sense of pressure or obligation! *smile* (((HUGS)))
