Building Defences

Building Defences

A Poem by Ntandoyenkosi Ngcobo

We get caught up building defences so that we don't get
hurt. We forget that not everyone that comes to our door
does.
When you've built up walls, after someone that you've let
in.
Disrespected your feelings, took what they came for.
All of your good intentions and kindness within,
If you want to take deliveries, you have to open the door.
When a cold wind blows, chilling you to your bone.
It's just a natural reaction, to quickly slam the door.
But doing that may stop the chill, but leave you all alone.
Eventually when a warm breeze blows, it will have you
wanting more.
The more obstacles we put in the way, between us and
everyone.
Makes it harder to navigate in the dark, when we stumble
down the corridor.
Rushing to let the light shine in, when we again can see
the sun.
Love is not some merchandise, that you can buy at any
store.
When we stop to think about, the walls that we erect.
They cover the outside of us and do nothing for the core.
The treasure is our heart and soul, we're hoping to
protect.
To let a little sun shine in, you have to open the door.
Time and perseverance, can erode the barriers that are
there.
If your eyes are the windows to your soul, then your arms
must be the door.
One day you may open your arms, to find them standing
there.
So let them fix the rip in your heart, that somebody else
tore.
