Remember

Remember

A Story by Kathryn Smith

I remember it well

It was May

The new warm spring wind

Turned bitter cold

And It began to snow

Do you remember?

Final exams were looming over my head

And I was so tired

Tired of the school year

Tired of the cold

Freezing in the hell of a Wisconsin winter

 That never seemed to end

It was bleak

Numb

All the world

Dead

All form of color

Gone.

Do you remember?

I remember

I needed something warm

So I walked into Starbucks

My second home that school year

The little shop held all of my sprinting thoughts

It saw my tests, studies, ink hands, and money

And there you were

You were always there

Smiling at me

Your eyes sparkled

They seemed shy

And whenever I walked in

You glowed

I stood before you with my arms wrapped around my body

My eyes desperate and sad

Cold and miserable from that snow;

Burying the cars

Claiming happiness

 Pitching good moods

Out the window

I shivered and shook in front of you

And I ordered a latte

Thats when you asked me:

Do you want a cup for here or to go?

What?

Instead of the usual paper cup that everyone got

You gave me a real mug and a little plate

The other baristas seemed thrown off

It kept my latte warmer

And that's when it happened

I saw you watching me

 Making sure I warmed up

And I felt that gentle love

The love In your gesture

I looked right at you

And for the first time

I smiled

Do you remember?

I won't forget

Now it is summer

And you sit in my church

You almost sat with me once

But you changed your mind

And you didn't think

That I wanted you to

I wanted you, too

When you're not there

The worship feels sad

The glory is empty

Love is what makes me want to pray

And I can see you watching me

I can feel your smiling

Right at me

And It makes my days

You know the way the clouds get?

After a big storm?

When the sun makes them light pink

Orange

Blue. and whimsical

That's what you are

To me

You know those summer afternoons?

When the sky is crystal clear and blue?

There are no clouds above

The earth is alive and full

Content and beautiful

Thats what I see

Inside of you and me

We are strangers

But I still remember

I remember it well

It was May

The new warm spring wind

Turned bitter cold

And It began to snow...

"I remember it well

it reads like a memory from a Bogie and Bacall film...just reeks of class!
Well penned Kat!

This,
I dearly love, Kathryn … clear to my toes from the tip of my nose.
It is beautifully touching, sweet, ever-so innocent and real, and I think real is that which I really like the most, because the reality of this one feels so very-very good, so very right!

Thank you, Dear Authoress for your shared tender warmth ⁓ Richard : )

Sweet, simple and stunning writing. Each line flowing perfectly into the other...an unspoken connection between strangers etched indelibly upon a heart..."That I wanted you, too". Wistful, romantic, perfect.
