Mamma

Mamma

A Story by Kathryn Smith

Mamma you get so angry

And I want to hug you

Sometimes I say things I don't mean

And most of the time

People misinterpret me

Mamma you wound me

At dinner you pushed the flower vase

Right in front of my face

So you couldn't see me

Mama you nag me

You guilt trip me

and Mama you wound  me

But you love me

You yelled at dad

and you yelled at me

He looked in my eyes

And I could see

So we sat in silence

Eating burgers and grapes

You smashed the cupboard doors

And you kept your frown

I've never seen anyone so forlorn

Mama we love you

Don't hurt me

And mama we're trying

Mama you're harsh

and Mama you're mean

but in the end

We are family

Your mother was mentally ill

and you never had a proper figure

So this treatment

Immature and cruel

Isn't your own fault

Mama we love you

We loved you from the start

This has such a forlorn sadness to it, a desperation to stop the hurt on both sides mixed with fear and a feel of being impotent to deal with it. Very powerful in words and images!
