Among the Bricks p2

Among the Bricks p2

A Story by Kathryn Smith

She was the last one standing
Among the bricks
But the devil appeared
And he charred her skin
Squeezing her pulsing heart
Running with it
And sharing it
With another
The bricks fell
One by one
She sat in the pew
Alone with no one
The candles they burned
Her soul felt weak
The church
It blurred
And she could not breathe
Lost and broken
She ran out the door
Tears in her car
She said never more
So she picked herself up
and walked a different way
Into a new church
And there she'd stay
It was the feast of St Blaze
Ironic enough
He saw her and cradled her
She felt like she was finally
Enough
His eyes they loved her
From afar
And on the altar he danced
He laughed
And she grew

One day in June
He would leave too
Though she withered and wandered
Crying through Lent
Her soul was made free
In pure love that God sent
She'd love him forever
And he'd never know
He was a Priest she would never let go
Among the bricks their love lay
For God
For another
Everything ripples
In life and in love
When your heart is broken
It is only the start

Just listen for him
Up above
