Earthly Thoughts

Earthly Thoughts

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Earthly Thoughts

There is no Starship Enterprise

to stimulate our thoughts

and mesmerise us with hope

of life beyond this earth.

So no Captain Kirk or Spock

to lead us in exploration

of our souls.

No Scotty with such precise skills

and science

to blind us true.

No Chekov to make us feel

the cold war is won,

or Uhura, tight tunic

to titilate and stimulate

hot blood.

What would HG Wells have thought

Or Asminov displayed?

What did Arthur think

when 2001 came and went

such a damp space squib?

Of course we will

conquer the stars,

then on to Mars

as we did discover a globe

to destroy.

This is a very clever, insightful, and of course, being somewhat of a trekkie I appreciate it tremendously.

Gosh I am impressed that you have trawled so deep. Not sure how you chose these ones though? Lol
from a kitch popular sci fi
to an author I have not read
and further refferences, alas
unknown to me, nonetheless,
a serious tone and nice effort,
of course

Someone who has not seen Star Trek must be a rare specimen. Many thanks Sheema.
This is a new field for me to find you in
good
the more of our life we explore
the more we grow
and maybe we won't get lost
when we travel down a different road
I have only brushed up against science fiction
though I did ride the dragons of Pern
for hours at a time

Science fiction is not my thing although I have enjoyed Arthur C Clarke's works and did like Star Tr.. read more
i loved the old star trek series and the writings of h.g.wells and i applaud the idea of labeling mankind as the great destroyer of planets, perhaps that is not so far out there....we seem to excel at this very thing. i enjoyed the diversity and uniqueness of this write, John...and, of course, it is very good.

Ha ha, Thanks Leslie.
Sad, because I really loved - you wont believe this - not Captain Kirk, but Spock. Sometimes we dont need to ramble on to send a social message accross. Humor and a touch of sarcasm does it better.
But I think you said it all last lines!

This is really cool John. I like your references to American sci-fi classics, and my older brothers would appreciate the Star Trek references. I like the message at the end- determined yet haunting. Well done

About
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
