My Climb

My Climb

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

My Climb

The stairway stretches

far above me

into celestial space;

twisting and twining

its path to an angel’s place.

I set off with vigour,

with hope;

with the strength of Hercules,

the determination of Bruce.

As I ascend I see you

far above,

in my heaven.

Within reach

and yet

each step I take

brings me no closer to you.

I plough on with certainty

sometimes skipping steps,

bounding to my joy.

At others treading

with deliberate care.

Occasionally I stop,

I catch my breath

then a glimpse of you

and soldier on.

Once or twice,

my energy,

my spirits drained,

I retreat

for fear of failure.

Then I see you again

in my heart

and I continue

my climb.
