That’s What Friends Are For

When dark chains drag you down

and the world sits heavy on your faith,

a hug, a few caring words

are worth their weight in gold.

When the devil meddles

and your sins give him cause,

a tender look, a sigh,

will help to dry your tears.

In the depth of your despair,

when you have lost all hope,

the gentle arm around your shoulder

can bring you back to life.

Love me some James Taylor haha! Excellent work John. My best friend and my girlfriend help me out when I'm in times of struggle. I can certainly relate to this.

This is very true. It is always refreshing not only for those certain people to be there for you when you are going through the dark moments of your life, but it always feels amazing how much they can inspire us. Great job,John.

I love it. You've hit the Friendship Target right in the bullseye my friend. Years ago, when I lost my job, I found out quickly just who my real friends are. It was like a Pop quiz for friendship. I was actually surprised at who surfaced to the top. As one of your friends said: Friendship is a Pot of Gold.
Love the poem!

Thank you my Lady
Nicely written, John, and obviously heartfelt. It does read a bit like a greeting card, though, as it doesn't have your usual unsentimental edge to it. Thanks for the James Taylor video, though. His is still the best version of his own song, isn't it? Mike.

Unfortunately people allow pride to get in the way of administering such affirmation and receiving in kind. Good piece my friend!

What a beautiful expression of friendship. Lucky are those who have such friendships for such are rare in today's world of materialistic, selfish, 'me-first' attitudes. I loved this poem John. Thanks for sharing.

Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
