The Silly Season

The Silly Season

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

How the Brits love to complain about the weather!

"

The Silly Season

We await the first rays of summer,

bemoaning the drear of winter months.

We count the days till spring

with its promise of relief for ailing bones

from damp and frost,

from snow and bitter wind.

We long to switch off central heating,

drain the pipes,

and discard the winter coats.

We long to open doors and windows,

fling them wide to the walls

and be freed from stuffy airless rooms,

trapped behind dingy, drawn curtains.

And yet, when the sun eventually arrives

with every brighter morn,

and the swelter of June begins,

we bemoan that too!

I think California reaches a happy medium most of the year, but "change" is something people simply desire from time to time. I think it's in our DNA!

You got it!
I will take the heat over cold any day but yes as it soars into the 90s with humidity so thick you can touch it; we do moan and groan

Give them the white, glittering beaches of Coastal Africa with the dazzling, aqua sea and the soft, balmy breeze all year round and they'll be happy :)

Okay, 20 degrees is freezin' a*s cold here in the states. I have to assume you're speaking in Celsious degrees. As to this little ditty:

"We long to open doors and windows,
fling them wide to the walls
and be freed from stuffy airless rooms,
trapped behind dingy, drawn curtains."

Now that is spring and lordy! those sweet breezes that carry new chlorophyll vibes.

Silly season, indeed...

Gee
20 degrees all year long my wish. Building sites are a mare in all weather, and I can gripe with the best of them.
Nothing but the truth written here and written well

Oh please! 24 degrees at least! But not on a building site lol. Many thanks Gee.
You are right John. Most people don't appreciate the warm days of Summer. They want Summer to appear and forget to slow down and enjoy the lakes and the seas. Thank you John for sharing the amazing poetry.

You are welcome John.
I remember spending 4 months in London's cruel winter. I couldnt step out of the house without wearing layers and layers of heavy clothing. Almost felt trapped. I longed for heat or some source of it. And when i returned back to Pakistan. I swear i wished for the winter in London again. You have written a wonderful poem about our realities. Fickle as we are. Amazing stuff John!! Loved it!!

Yup, human nature....and it is not just the Brits who do this. In South Florida, we complain in the winter if the temperature is below 65 degrees, but in the summer we complain it is too hot. Mother Nature just can't please us at all! :) Lydi**
