Regrets, I've Had a Few

Regrets, I've Had a Few

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

If only.

"

Regrets, I Have a Few

I wish Perseus had turned me to stone

so that I could bear this weight more ably.

I once dreamt that I would don Hermes sandals

and wield the shield of Athena,

and that I would slay all three Gorgons

in their lair.

But alas that was never to come to pass

and instead I have lived in the shadow

of the Serpent;

That monster poisoning my blood

with venom so potent

that my heart has simply ceased

to exist.

Forever, I longed to attend

the grand feast of Circe,

but for the pigs.

And I too would return

for the gift of immortality.

But I would simply be playing

Apollo's tune.

the usage of Greek mythology was amazing and unique. i loved how you brought out the point and theme of this poem through Mythology. I had to google many things mentioned in this poem to grasp a proper understanding.

The monster poisoning my veins makes me think of either chemo or a drug addiction. It sounds like this is a battle that has been raging for sometimes and the narrator of the piece feels ill prepared for the hand to hand combat.

A life gone awry in the painful grip of the serpent that proved to be too strong. Reading this eloquent poem I felt hate can immortalize the spirit as powerfully as love can. It gives purpose even in destruction. Such an amazing and powerful write John.
