HungerA Poem by John Alexander McFadyenIt is more widespread and closer than you think.Hunger Why should I complain? There are cities, towns and villages in Syria reduced to dust and among whose ruins human remains are strewn; civil war has destroyed nearly every farm. There are hundreds of thousands living in make-shift camps experiencing hunger and disease. There are people starving in sub Saharan Africa and war torn Yemen, Asia has to two-thirds of the world’s hungry people. Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, Mexico and Central America all have high levels of hunger. Across this 21st century globe seven hundred and seventy-five million people experience hunger every day of their lives. And not all in remote or war torn regions. Nearly fifteen percent of U.S. households, approximately forty-nine million Americans, including fifteen point nine million children, struggle to put food on the table. Here the measure of hunger is “food insecurity” an ongoing uncertainty of where the next meal will come from. In the UK more than eight million people live in households that struggle to put enough food
on the table, with over half
regularly going a whole day without eating. Why should I
complain? 13/07/17 © 2017 John Alexander McFadyenReviews
