Mothers

Mothers

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Our relationships are complex entities.

"

We love them

and we hate them.

They gave us life

through birth

but often felt

they stifled us

as we tried

to flap our wings.

They pampered us,

protected us

from harm,

and kept our drive

to fly the nest

in check

until our wings matured.

And we saw this

as mean,

controlling,

adult behaviour,

when all it meant

was we were

deeply loved.

As a mother myself now, I understand better how it all works; 'tis complicated, but love always wins out.

Yeah . . . so true. My mom was a bit of a worry wort about me seein' I fell down an outside cellar way when I was two. She was always there for me through thick and thin. Still miss her after 32 years.

A few minor conflicts when I was a teenager which was decades ago, but I have nothing but love and respect for my Mum. She wasn't just a mum, but a great friend too. She is in a nursing home now and only a shell of her former self, but I love her even more for her vulnerability. Yes, where there is friction it will usually be because our mum's have our best interests at heart and we don't see it that way. You describe well here in this nicely composed free verse, that there are two sides of the coin.

You are welcome John.
i felt very close to my mother and loved her much...but yes, the conflicts that come with us not living up to exactly what they expect us to become...and how they may try to steer our course.
excellent piece with much truth,
