Horse and Carriage Sleigh Ride

Horse and Carriage Sleigh Ride

A Poem by Patricia Wedel
"

Sleigh bells and thunder snow

"
You trotted in a snow storm where

thunder and lightening appeared...

A horse named Thunder Snow

who rode in a Kentucky Derby...

You gave me the ride of a lifetime...

sashaying around a winter wonderland...

Bred in Ireland and owned by Royals in Dubai,

you are destined to be a Winner after all.

Wishing you all a Currier and Ives Christmas...

As an Equine Scientist and thoroughbred lover, this poem is right on cue for me, Pat.

I am well versed in the exploits of Thunder Snow. He is a fine galloper. Any horse that can win the Dubai World Cup by nearly six panels is a very good athlete. His Kentucky Derby effort was out of character. From my experience it seemed possible that when the horse jumped, the saddle slipped slightly backwards towards the rump. Such an occurrence usually always results in the horse buckjumping. That aside, the only other thing i noticed was that there were shadows of the grandstand towers across the track and quite often flighty types can get spooked by these. Either way, his performances since that day have marked him down as a quality animal. There will be no more Kentucky Derby for him though. The race is restricted to three year olds, and as such, a horse only gets one chance at the glory. Perhaps he will return to defend his World Cup crown in March.

I enjoyed this poem immensely. It touches on one of my prominent areas of expertise and your addition of the Xmas theme to it is very imaginative.

A wonderfully inventive poem. Very different and much appreciated by this Equine aficionado.

How I love the glimpses of past joys mingled with the sweet light of today. This sleighing song has always been one of my favorites, as were the images of Currier and Ives... and this wonderland world of words seems like an awakening dream.

Probably due to the incidental mentions of what, where and so forth: your horse - Thunder Snow, unknown to me (tho will research) reads to be such a special creature.. perhaps exhaling magic from flaring nostrils, nervously waiting for the of. Did he really run in a snow storm, only to melt the hearts of everyone who saw him? So well laid as a Christmas card, Patricia. Yet more 2019 happies riding across distance to you and your darlings xx

I don't know how I missed this one Pat, but better late than never. Horses are superb creatures, I love to watch them race. You paint with your words a most beautiful scene and Thunder Snow had quite a history. Too late for Christmas greetings, but not for New Year. Hope yours is happy and peaceful. All good wishes

Chris

What a lovely, nostalgic write for the season. It brings to mind of a Christmas card or even painting. Wonderful choice of words and tribute to a beautiful thoroughbred. Hope your Christmas and New Year were "Currier and Ives" to perfection.
