Free of Me

Free of Me

A Poem by Chloe..Across the Universe

When I was a little girl I wanted to be a woman -
Lipstick, high-heels , black nylons for me
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a Vet
Sick puppies and kitty cats I would heal
When I was a little girl
I wanted to be a mother
My baby doll I did care for, love well

When I was a teenager I wanted to be a woman
Bleeding from the womb
When I was a teenager I wanted to be loved
Kissed and hugged , cuddled and cooed
When I was a teenager my mother said I stood funny
Crooked back , a crack in my otherwise non-perfection
Surgery was the only cure

For me I was robbed of my teenage years
A woman is all I wanted to be
A Vet with sick puppies and kitty cats
Off to college I went
I made up for the robbing of my teenage years
Boys, cars, pot and booze
Hoping to bleed with each new moon

Then a  little girl I wanted to be
No worries and my mommy to take care of me
No sick puppy dogs or kitty cats
No lipstick , nylons high heel shoes
No bleeding from my woman's womb

A little girl with no worries carefree
As now all I have are staid memories
No one to chase away the boogies at bay
Being a woman is not all I thought
If I could be a little girl again
I wish I were a little girl again
I want to be free of me
Can I please be a little girl again
I want my mommy to take care of me

I was just thinking of this myself the other day. I had wanted to grow up fast and become a different person. Now that I am older, I have started to kind scare myself when I want to be young again. When mom used to do all the work I do now as a wife with my own house. I'm wanting to be a kid again to have my mom back to the way I used to see her. Now I feel like the parent and I don't like it. Being young would mean she would have to focus more on me and less of her bad habits. This would take a while to explain. I really related to this one and wanted to say so. Off to read another...

This really makes me think twice about my decisions. As I am a teenager and I dont make very wise decisions but poems like this make me think twice for a while...

Very honest and reflective of sweeter times.

Poignant and tragic and somehow inevitable. The paradox of needing and wanting is plain to see, and the circle of life's irony along with it. The terrible longing and weakness which dreams of safety and the comfort of the metaphorical womb starts out with innocence and childhood -- then along the way of progress and adolescence and so-called "maturity" we lose sight of what it means. But we do know what is meant by disillusionment; and the loss of innocence. The irony is that we always seem to want to be "free of me" one way or the other. Perhaps we are destined to want what we cannot have once we've got what we want...
Charming like a musical box playing a lullaby, but disturbing by the recognition of its tune.

Your words are true for the most of us. I told my children. Enjoy your youth. Life will take the joy and laughter one day. I like the way you create this tale. I need a few days where freedom is playing baseball and not concern for the world around me. Thank you for you excellent poetry.
