The Priest

The Priest

A Poem by Paul Bell

The priest came on at Paddington
Sat across from me
I nodded in a nonchalant way
He gazed inside of me
So strange
Like he knew
Where I was going to
Mrs Black, just sex
Well that’s not really true
There was her friend
But that was because Mrs Black had the flu
You can understand the sacrifice I made
I know you can relate
Don't look at me like that
I was getting round to Pat and Jill
But you should know
They said they were on the pill
I know I don't see the kids
You can understand
Being a man of the cloth
The busy lives we lead
Time just gets away
I suppose in a way we’re both the same
Tending to our flocks
Putting the world to rights
Me and you
We are the few
He got up to leave
I feel his hand on my sleeve
Enough said
He punches me on the head
I’m in total confusion
He makes the sign
Go with god my son
I've administered your absolution.

I like how you pull the priest into your thoughts, carry on this whole conversation, then he gives you the absolution your conscience felt you needed.

Okay, Tell him "Son, sorry"
"In nomine Patris et certera, etcetera... Perhaps you could have titled it" Tending our flocks".
I liked it. 🐳

I suppose there's still time.
So clever and comical! I guess the mind-reading was a clergical perk! Great poem with jaunty flow and superb punch-line! Pun-ha! Delightful read.

Should he be deflocked for assault. lol
oh man!!! if the priests had that kind of power i would be afraid to go out in public ... how the guilty conscience will take over ones private conversations eh!? thanks for allowing me a seat on this bus .. very relateable for me ..a poignant human moment shared along the way!

Past Paddington
In the moments leading
Up to the concussion
The priest understood
they were goddamed
brothers in fornication
So he gave him the
gift of absolution
Now may I ask you
What's the reason
For your confusion?

The poem came on as we have such gems in our parishes too. Great going Paul! ;)
