Attention

Attention

A Poem by Pauline Marie Daley

A child is brought into this world,

He acts so cute and he is twirled,

In circles around parents and friends,

They never even think to lend,

Him to a stranger for them to feed,

Attention is the only thing he would never need.

Then one day he's thirteen,

Everyone's now cruel and mean.

He can't do this and he can't go there,

His world is now just not fair.

Wait 'till I'm eighteen, I'll find a way out,

Just leave me alone and I'll wander about.

He's sixteen today.

He screams no matter what you say.

You've left him alone,

These past few years.

You don't even notice his tears.

That seem to go away,

Just as long as you stay,

Near him.

You arrive home to flashing lights,

The police have shown your house up bright.
What's going on? You ask fearfully.

They lead you around the back tearfully.

He just wanted you to see him.

To listen, love, and pay attention tohim.

He jumped and now he's gone.

But before he left, he wrote you a song.

You take it in your hands,

And see the blood of a would-be man,

Dripped on the paper.

And on that small saber.

He cut his arms before he died.

All you could do was stand there and cry.

Your son is gone because you

Paid him just too,

Little Attention.
