This was my first published piece back in high school circa:1993 Book Name:Words and Pictures, An African-American Studies Project

A different

time and place,

there was

a time I knew

your face,

there was

a time I

knew your race.

 

You never

saw the

true beauty

you had within.

 

But now you've

lightened your

skin to be more

like him.

 

Only to him

you're still

a n****r until

the end.

As an African studies major this rings true I suppose - the words are strong but I have never met anyone but Michael Jackson that changed their skin - do you think that is something many want to happen? This is an inquisitive work for sure - well written and makes one think - I would love to see more feedback about it from any race...Thank you.

Is this about Michael Jackson, specifically, or is it just a general statement about some of the self-hatred issues that people have?

Either way, this piece was from '93. What a shame that it still rings true.
