Standing back

Standing back

A Poem by Phill Oz O'fee
"

Melancholy moment ...

"

Standing back

Standing back

Upon this slippery riverbank

I watch the populous

Hurling headlong

Down life’s raging rapids

A phrenetic

Churning beck to nowhere

Greed prompted

With promises of paradise

If they don’t drown first

Choking bobbing egos

Are left gasping for clear air

Abashed by their own excrement

Narcissistic swimmers

Polluting a fast flowing torrent

Looking around

Mordant current escapees

Line the embankment

Kindred spirits

Saved from Satan’s sink-hole

On soft grasses

Of common sensibilities

We lay down to contemplate

Our narrow retreat

From political propaganda

But the screams

Of those obliviously engulfed

Resound painfully

In our open-minded ears

As they perish at estuary’s end

and those soft grasses of common sensibilities get smaller and smaller and the water keeps rising.
this is quite a powerful write, theme driven and image laden.
Egos will perish in the end, and the meek, what's left of them...will inherit what is left.

This is a well-constructed extended metaphor. I was totally picturing the tumble of head-bobbing water in a rushing river of all the crap people think is necessary about their habits for living. Since simplifying in the last decade, I can see how much I was tumbling in this stupid stream of useless excess most of my life. My final act (recently) was to stop my satellite TV service & I actually had withdrawals becuz I'd become conditioned to constantly be pissed about the way everything is going "out there"! Now I don't pay attention to "out there" & my universe view has changed dramatically. I love your poem. It provokes a ton of ideas, different for every reader (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
