In Her Eyes

In Her Eyes

A Poem by Melinda McQueen
"

Dedicated to my Grandmother.

"

Years of seeing,

Years of being.

Her eyes have beheld

Much in time spent well.

She has seen her babies grow,

And has loved them so.

Her family was made bigger by God’s grace,
With grandbabies all over the place.

In her eyes we could do no wrong,

As she sung to us her favorite songs.

In her eyes she was blessed
Even when her nerves we would test.

Now her eyes no longer see

The faces of her babies.

For she is now legally blind

And only shapes can she find.

Her eyes… the windows to her soul--

A soul to never grow old.

I wonder what she sees

When closing her eyes to sleep.

In her eyes times of old replay.

In her eyes we stay.

In her eyes life has been enough.

In her eyes is unconditional love.

I believe your entire family must be blessed, for you to return such an unconditional love to one who has loved you so, shows how incredible not only a writer but a person that you are. It goes without saying that your Grandmother would be proud knowing you had written this for her. I feel in a way with this you restore not only her sight with the color of love, but you awaken the "blind" who can see every day but miss the most important moments. Sometimes, as you even put it in your last stanzas, we feel the deepest when we close our physical eyes and allows our hearts to fully open and feel. Thank you for sharing this extremely personal and beautifully written poem!

Thanks so much for reading and leaving your much appreciated review. God bless.
I do understand this poem. I watched my dear Grandmother go blind and she loved my kids till the end.

I love your emphasis on her eyes
the window to the soul

the love she gives radiated through her eyes

And though she lost her sight
not much has changed

You are blessed. I never had a grand mother. My dad's mom died when he was 2, and my mother's mom when she was only 7. My mom was legally blind the last ten years of her life. She saw light but not much else. She has been gone some time yet I still close my eyes at times and see if I am able to do as many things as she still managed to do. Like drive my dad crazy..joking. A beautiful poem. Grandmothers can be the joy of our lives. I was very close to mine too. She couldn't carry a tune to save her soul but she made up the most wonderful stories.
One suggestion change "And shapes she can only find" to "And only shapes can she find"
