The True American Dream

The True American Dream

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

Founded by faith,

Our forefathers proclaimed

The United States

A place where God reigned.

People of every race flock here

In search of a better life.

To reach while defying fear,

The American dream in sight.

The fighting soldiers’ sweat, blood and tears,

Slain bodies and minds

Helped build this place through the years.

Faith did not hide.

The pursuit of freedom in their hands,

The prayer to be free

In their homeland.

The American dream, the united heart’s plea.

Sadly, hatred still rages

As evil runs rampant, full speed.
Hope through the ages

Still to believe.

Equal rights for all

Is the claim under the Red, White and Blue.

Waving in the breeze of an answered call,

Awaiting the human race’s truth.

When shall we know

The meaning of peace?

When will we bestow

The True American Dream?

There's a difference between freedom and liberty...

Hatred and evil are sort of ambiguous, and while its dificult for me to pin down what you are refering to, i'll take the leap. Racism is no longer an issue in the usa. People we refer to as racist are simply insecure and will hang thier hat on any issue that they feel will get them attention. Gays are a bit weirder, but less prone to violence, so let them play. I think it's important to let the legal system run its course whatever the case. It's important to remember that people of every faith have joined our society and if we cant accept them, that makes us kind of gay. We are privileged to live in a country where we are free to feel and say whatever we want. We are stupid when we give that up. Our forefathers would tweet, wtf...

Was just watching some episodes of Sons of Liberty on the history channel... seems they don't make them like they used to... Yes, there are so many voices still crying out for freedom... for justice... and we need to rise and fill in the gaps so all can find their dreams fulfilled. A powerful write, Melinda.

Yes, you're right. Thank you for reading.
Seeing the news each day, watching the people flee countries, risking their lives in the sea, sending little children alone, hoping for a better life...and often I can sit in a café drinking coffee and hear people cry and moan because they cannot feed their kids and still have their 2 packs of cigarettes a day or the minutes on their fancy cell phones. My dad worked 2 jobs to provide for his family. Valentine

With everything that is definitely in disrepair in our country there is no doubting that it is still the finest country by most measures. The American Dream? Definitely not what my parents and their parents had in mind. In fact, I can tell you that the best I can come up with to illustrate the American Dream is survival. And the hope for that survival to continue...till when? Lots of questions open for debate. I have no doubt about your patriotism, and especially as a veteran I applaud you for it. I still love my country be sometimes have trouble recognizing it. take care...dan

Well written tribute piece here Melinda. Things always change nothing seems to stay the same. I think we will always be fighting somewhere, maybe even here someday but lets hope not.

The dream for the ages and it is still the same dream compared to most of the world, even though it is a bit tarnished. Thanks, nicely penned.

I was in war zones. A traveling Army Chaplain would show-up. All the free Soldiers would gather and pray together. Belief in God kept us strong. A powerful dear Poet. If we lose God. USA is no-more. Thank you Melinda for sharing your thoughts and outstanding poetry.

Thank you Melinda. I appreciate the kind words.
When people take their oaths and pledges to this their country seriously and not just so much lip service.
When we realize that there are so many other people that would love to have what every American takes for granted
