A Name

Was just thinking of what a name means and why we have them. And this poems started forming itself. :)

A name,

something precious,

yet, easily lost

Syllables,

that's all it is

Letters,

all it'll ever be

Yet, it defines us all

A name,

something to be kept close,

but, quickly forgotten

Insignificant to others, but...

A name, it is a treasure

Priceless, yet worthless

nothing to do with who you are,

but so much more

A name,

something so filled with love, so meaningless

A name,

that's all we are

It may be romantic of me to think so, but humans are so much more than a name. We are ideas, thoughts emotions, an entire universe trapped in a few neurons. But to others, sometimes we are just a name. And you're right, in our culture, names are just something to identify you and nothing more. But in other cultures (such as Native American) names have a huge meaning! I really enjoyed this write, and I read in your bio that you aspire to be a poet. I believe you have succeeded.

I know that names have different meanings and beliefs to go with them depending on the culture. I was writing in the thought of what started names, and how the meanings are different and yet still the same. Also the fact of what a name truely is without culture dictating its meaning. I wasn't writing about humans but everything that is named pretty much. Tried to keep it general and all, so as not to offend people and cultures.

Oh, I didn't even take into account the naming of everyday objects- very interesting! Language is a complex think that we may never understand despite inventing it. Keep in mind that writers occasionally offend. It's practically in the job description.
