Limbo

Limbo

A Poem by Butch Decatoria

I experiment with unreasoned curiosity

and the shadows have begun
to gather,
a colony of silence to feast
     like termites on newborn sapling
flesh,
unfettered voracity
on every corner, wall,
     niche - deep
     and dark countless eyes
an audience to my guilt, to faithless pleas,
my grip in self-pity
contained in jars - collecting my demise...

Thoughts wrought
     in sleeplessness
     in self-induced lies
to parlay a quicker journey
opening the floor below
     and breathe envious fire on my halo;
they weigh down my innocence
strength easily lost with
the multiple wrongs made, because a boy
     does not a man make
to mistake a hard kiss for cherubs' flight
or wake of listless love
which shake one's soul to cry

I ask for forgiveness in the hollowness
     which churns
distant echoes in turn
reply
my captive voice
     so softly fading
     evidence that limbo is thirsty
and waiting...

Eternity in a sigh.

first of all congrats on your "bronze" ...
wow! back with the hippies i would say with earnestness "Heavy man! Really heavy!" :) you have brought to light thoughts and feelings that are between the layers of sleep and waking ..they startle one awake with anxiety .. your poem tells us why ..your honesty and certain enlightenment are gratifying for me ..the reader .. no wonder you placed in the competition .. well done says i! I believe that "Limbo" is all that .. probably more .. we do pay for our impetuous, dishonest nature when standing before the Light ..a tragedy and a pity we lack understanding God's Love

This is very powerful expression of the guilty conscience awaiting reckoning. The following phrases: "breathe envious fire on my halo" and "and the shadows have begun to gather, a colony of silence to feast like termites on newborn sapling" are especially memorable images. Well written
