Footfalls of Grief

Footfalls of Grief

A Poem by Poetic License

stutter

stop

step

stutter

stop

step

stutter

stop

step

this is my day now

stutter

stop

step

i rise from the sleepless night and stutter back to life

i pause and sway, waiting for equilibrium

i step furtively, cautiously, quietly

stutter

stop

step

i smell your shampoo and my shambling gait falters

i hear a familiar song I once sang over you and my forward momentum stops

i lean as far out over my feet as I can and finally, I am finally forced to take a step

stutter

stop

step

i pass by children playing on swing sets and my motion shudders

i hear the squealing of happiness never meant to be and I stop

i imagine chasing you across the yard again and I step

stutter

stop

step

i listen to others grieving, wailing and I stutter

i recall countless hours spent on knees begging and I stop

i feel the familiar surge of rage of loss and anger of betrayal and I step

stutter

stop

step

i smile remembering your first attempt at walking, you swayed and stuttered forward

i can hear your delighted giggle as you stopped to admire your new upright posture

i watch you grin from ear to ear as you step

stutter

stop

step

i follow the example left by tiny feet…rise, sway, stutter forward

i stop and stare in awe that I am upright, alive without a beating heart

i step because to do otherwise would do disservice to the memory of you

stutter

stop

step

stutter

stop

step

I liked this poem. I liked how the set-up of the poetry. Each set of lines. A story and a memory. Sometime we must stop and observe our place and our journey. Thank you my friend for sharing the amazing poetry.

Wow. A very deep and emotional piece of writing....

The use of repetition throughout the poem is mesmerising, particularly for a device that is too often applied to works and used in a mundane fashion. But here, the repetition has a huge emotional impact, showing the reader just how much of a struggle life has become under the burdens you bear.

Very delicately you have given the reader a view into your private pain and we can understand the events behind it and feel your pain with you. It takes courage to write about things that overwhelm our soul but it is also strangely cathartic to do so. Every word, every sentence does dispel some of the pain, though the pain will always linger.

This is a very painstakingly written piece, true heart and soul, pain and blood poured on the page. All i can say is to always cherish the memories and do justice to them, and take those steps forward, however stuttering, in honour of those who can no longer step for themselves.

A wonderful healing write. Very courageous and solemnly executed.
