Sold Souls

Sold Souls

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver
"

For all souls held in captivity, you are seen and not forgotten...

"

Do you ever pause to think about the space you inhabit?
I mean really think how vast your space actually is
how you are free to walk for miles, should you wish
to dance in endless spirals, should you desire
to roam the world at your leisure, should it appeal

Do you ever pause to really think about your space?
how your movements are unrestricted and unlimited
how you are able to step outside and feel the breeze
wander through nature and hear the wisdom of trees

I wonder if you reflect on such an important factor
that should be a basic, important humane right
for there are souls without freedom who have no say
those without a voice who become targeted, easy prey

Ripped from the womb of life, they become entertainment
nothing more than slaves for a mere fee and payment
kidnapped from the ocean to mourn, train and torment
who do they ask for help when they can not vent
when corporations add up the money spent

Do you ever pause to think of the space you inhabit?
for the souls who are sold, butchered and bled
have no such thing in the land of the living dead
only restriction in small tanks that become their deathbed
as we look on without a care for their silenced dread

I wonder if you reflect on such an important factor
that should be a basic, important humane right
I wonder if you ever stop to examine their plight
however painful and insidious the barbaric sight
it is up to us to educate and continue the fight

It's a sad fact that humans are killing rare species, in India we are facing same issue related to the tigers and the sad fact is, fishers found dead whales near beaches and those whales died due to water pollution, Indian fishermen do not capture whales or shark and they have theories, they pray whales.
I hope someday human understand this....

I agree. I saw the free sea animals in the Pacific. To lock-up any wild animals. Is a sin of man. Thank you dear Poet for sharing the amazing poetry, photos and thoughts.

Poppy, I love this one.
If only more people would stop, listen and think?

I think this piece is relevant given the current sociocultural and political climate of our world. Nearly fifty years ago on the eve of his death during the Watts riots, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King wrote in his book 'Where Do We Go From Here?' that the greatest challenge we now face as a species is the ability to see one another as human. Nearly fifty years later we are still failing to achieve this. It is far easier for us to dehumanize one another than it is to do the opposite and the outcome of that practice is obvious in the fact that we are literally living in Hell on Earth right now. Our dehumanization of one another is so thorough that when one of us is unjustly brutalized we bat nary and eye and yet when someone who still possesses a modicum of humanity speaks out against said injustice they are shouted down because we have enshrined our inhumane existence as desirable instead of the exact opposite despite the toll it is taking on our civilization and home world. This piece is definitely a catalyst for triggering deeper discussions about the state of our species and what can be done to address the issues driving the problems affecting our society. Well done.

It kinda bothers me that we seem to be so willing to give more 'human' rights to certain animals, than we give to many People in 3rd world countries. We can be shocked and appalled if someone is found mistreating cute little kittens, or abusing dogs. Yet so many other species, like the ones we enjoy eating, are free to be kept in such horrid, tortuous conditions. Seems pretty hypocritical to me!

There are three very good reasons to get off meat!
This is a great topic to write on...it does suck to see humans take over everything as if this is our world to destroy. We want a whale in a park to make money so we go catch a whale imprison it in a park and get rich off it. Crazy world we live in.

Poweful words! We can see so much of our lives if we take a step back and view ourselves from the outside. I love the truth in this--a truth not many discuss often. And it's sad that so many souls, human and animal a like, are held captive by the abusive powers of the world; corporations, governments, billionaires, etc. In all, wonderful poem! :)
