There Is Always A Choice

There Is Always A Choice

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver
"

The woods are a place of mystery and sometimes give you visions from other worlds...

"

Today is all you have

said Pan as he bent to pick flowers

from patchouli scented earth

His tall, abnormal presence

stooped in awkward posture

focused on nature’s treasures

It is true

the centre of the woods

have always held mystery

Yet never had I thought it possible

to meet such an entity

in daylight glow

A god of the wild, no less

with legs and horns

of a goat

It isn't every day

you meet a satyr

adorned with moss

Somehow

I had entered another realm

of perception

Today is all you have

he repeated in a gruff voice

daffodils held to his chest

I knew then as I had for a long time

that life had tilted the scales

rose petals had fallen on silent ground

Yet without darkness

how does one befriend

subtle warmth of light

If this day is all I have

may the clouds slow their pace

let the heavens illuminate

Let flaws be small mercies

in order to evolve

in this strange, unknown world

Allow me to inhale

the sweet fragrance of the flowers

you so gracefully pluck

It isn't every day

you meet a satyr

with wise words to bestow

Let me be as the gentle rose

balanced with both heart and thorns

in life’s surreal ebb and flow

Perception will alter or falter

only the self can choose

whether to wilt or grow

This piece has a very beautiful but surreal feeling to it. Pan's words of wisdom, "Today is all you have," are so true. We may plan for the future but each day must be lived in the present. Tomorrow is the next today. A James Dean quote from one of his movies: "Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today." Todays are entities that demand our attention, watching our step as we pick the pretty flowers.
Wonderful piece, Poppy. take care...dan

I really like this piece. "Perception will alter or falter," indeed. Great line! I enjoy the peace of this poem, even throughout Pan's gruff, almost warning-like statement that "today is all you have." Very true words which, to some, could induce anxiety. But it is delivered in such a way - while harmlessly collecting flowers - that it just seems to be a wise observation meant to encourage the subject to live and appreciate the small beauties that are everywhere. In a way, this reminded me of David Foster Wallace's brilliant "This is Water" speech. Well done!

I think you tripped over a certain organism called a fungi honestly. And yet, I had to fire up the Mummer's Dance this morning. I can see you dancing with Pan right now.

Smiles...thanks hon...lovely comment :)
if some one came up to me and told me that today is all i have, i would be so scared, yet in essence we should live as if today is the last day, give our all, be good, work hard, forgive, love and have good deeds for today since we do not know about tomorrow.

I like your take on perception it's enlightening
To wander life and choose to grow or fall through any experience it's all a matter of perception .....
