There Were Also Goblins On the Roof

There Were Also Goblins On the Roof

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver

Tap tap
I heard them
no-one else did
no-one else dared

We shall give her sedatives
they will help her sleep
said a doctor
by the name of Young

Not the best idea
to give a seven year old girl
something to knock her out
as they say

I remember the dead
would pull on the blankets
huddle together in the corner
of my frozen room

I remember the chill
so bitterly cold
I would hide down the bed
just to find some warmth

There were nights when I touched
their outstretched, pale hands
in an effort to communicate
so they knew I accepted them

No-one else dared to look
no-one else wished to see
that the spirits around me
were real and not madness

It doesn't matter anymore
expectations of being believed
vanished long ago
like my pink diary

I would take notes
scrawl them in minimal light
to keep my thoughts sane
give each ghost a name

Strange how time dissolves
such memories, blends them
into a supposed reality
where nothing seems real

It seems ironic now
I wouldn't mind a few sedatives
to ease insomnia's negatives
if only to blot out the muffled messages

As usual, I will dodge away, and try to give a smile. I live in a house of sad memories, so it is part of my job. I remember a dream from childhood. There was a witch under my bed. The classic witch from the Wizard of Oz was under my bed. How did I know? Her hat would peak up beside my bed. I would just try to grab it. I will keep trying to keep the dreams in their place.

Time is the healer for most things.

The words honest and direct. The above lines stood out to me. Life does blend and our eyes and mind see the world with a different vision. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry dear friend.

Time gives us the perspective to rationalise, I guess, thank you dear Coyote :)

I agree dear Poet and you are welcome.
wanting to give into the drugs that once scared you is a powerfully sad confession - sometimes the unknown can seem friendlier to us than current circumstances.

So very true, thank you Cascara :)
Ah, the division of the masses, those who believe and those whose eyes stay intentionally closed. I favor with the first. Great piece Poppy.

Monumentally moving, Poppy. So sad when a child has psychological problems and no one understands...no one is supportive. Then again, if the child genuinely sees other worldly beings and no one believes it, the child will end up questioning his or her visions. Having nothing to believe in...not even yourself...is a horrid way to live no matter how old a person is. I am a cynic, but not when it comes to ESP....I believe there are spirits watching us. The messages are not always pleasant....and I think that is why some choose not to believe they exist. In any case, the emotions expressed in this poem are very real, Poppy.....and, as I said, so very moving. Lydi**

This reminds me of 'The Sixth Sense' film. It's a very interesting subject: children who are naturally mediums, and this poem talks about it in an original style. It's very convincing and makes me feel sure it must be true and that you were a mediumistic child.

There are so many unexpected and well-crafted thoughts & ideas here! I'm a believer, even if I wasn't one before reading this. I love the fresh & vivid details from your own youthful remembrances, as well as other anecdotal "evidence" presented here. My much-older sister is/was a "medium" and she used to hold séances when I was a little girl -- watching older family members involved in this "seeing" of the dead . . . I have to say, it was pretty believable! I love this: "expectations of being believed vanished long ago" . . . and: "I wouldn't mind a few sedatives to ease insomnia's negatives" . . . very clear, straightforward writing that draws lasting pictures in our imaginations.

It is not always easy to believe that Ghost exist, in India you would find almost everyone who believes in Ghost or some spirits, as we study or our horizons expands; we stop believing in Spirits. Often we are very cynical about it, but there is nothing wrong with the idea of having our personal growth, maybe these are coming right from our neurons... and maybe, our mind is only our friendly ghost in the neighborhood?
