Of Birds and Dolphins

Of Birds and Dolphins

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver

Once damaged
fresh wings take a while
to regrow
the trusting bird
who once flew so freely
becomes caged in torment
when mistreated or unloved
yet so many give treasures
with unconditional compassion
to those who would wrong them
why so few see the charms of such beauty
I shall never understand
this world is a heavy domain
my soul belongs in other realms
where energy becomes us all
and innocence is never abused
soon it will be hunting season in Taiji
and like the tortured bird
so frail with mistrust
the dolphins are unaware
they will soon be kidnapped
from their home and all they know
to live a life of captivity
or worse
be murdered for their meat
even though it contains mercury
this world is a heavy realm
for the sensitive few
I blame no animal for their lack of trust
knowing what humans can and will do

Strange I am reading about the Porpoise callers of the South Pacific and the hunting of Pilot whales in the Faroe islands at the moment. So it was the title that caught my eye first of all.
I love the phrasing in here. All of the phrasing but some took on an extra meaning for me within the context of the whole poem. This was true of '....this world is a heavy domain'. I find that phrase so evocative. And the following living in other domains makes it all the more.
A lovely if sad evocation of the seeming inabilty of mankind to be able to live with other life. Or with ourselves for that matter Other domains. Excellent and touching. It doesn't sometimes seem to be cruelty in seems to be disrespect or infatuation with ourselves.

I agree, thanks Cascara :)
Humans are the only animals in denial mode and they at best can think of only themselves, most of them. That leads to destruction of everything because we belong to each other.

Many thanks Paloma :)
Hate to admit it, but it is the truth. Man with his plundering nature has been destroying the lives of innocent creatures.
Loved your writing and your thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

Many thanks Nwang :)
Your wise far-reaching well-selected words conjure up every deep shameful realization I've had, frequently watching documentaries showing humans how our actions have been so damaging & greedy & wasteful with our natural resources! Even tho your message is clearly a tribute to the furry & feathered & finned creatures, it could also apply to the kind of tender-hearted human that is similarly damaged by selfish unthinking so-called friends/family, of which I've known a few . . . great job!
