Shelled and Shamed

Shelled and Shamed

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver
"

For Remembrance weekend in the UK...lest we forget...

"

The distant drum roll
had sent them mad
in the name of glory
some men
were more shaky
than other men
one man said
rigid and shivery
mind separated from body
they lost their speech
still the drum roll would continue
artillery welcomed dawn and night
some men prayed while others laughed
some were stricken by paralysis
others suffered hysteria on their path
those who had seen too much
became blind
those who had heard too many drums
became deaf
nightmares reigned over sleep
insomnia became the norm
most were afraid to admit such
after all, they wore a uniform
still the cacophony cursed the air
settled on corpses
piled in bloodied mud
how do you prepare for it
or cope
perhaps you can't
one man wept
as another soldier
with widened eyes
welcomed sweet death

Us soldier cry for friends lost to war.
"one man wept
as another soldier
with widened eyes
welcomed sweet death"
Only soldiers and their family know. The cost of war. Thank you for sharing your powerful poetry and the amazing verbal poetry.

Scary thoughts are brought forth as I read this one...
battle, soldiers, and sadness.
Well done!

This was painful to read truthfully. I felt it provided the sense of chaos of going into battle, and took us from simply remembering those past to empathy for their trauma.

My heart goes out to those that died but anger goes out to those responsible for their deaths due to stubborn, stupid outdated bad decisions, that I find is unforgivable. Good Pawns sacrificed. A lovely poem though Poppy

your poem brings a weight to my heart ..so much suffering ...the victory is not sweet ..the tragedies linger ...ghosts in silent presence .. as you say .."lest we forget" :(
