Reaching For You As Time Caves In

Reaching For You As Time Caves In

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver
"

"Of all base passions, fear is the most accursed." William Shakespeare

"

The universe sang tonight
I can't explain the sound
somewhere between sleep
and wanting chocolate
I remembered three words
from an ominous article
I read with morning eyes
Global war approaches
I can't comprehend
such times of death
before I touch you
I can't fathom
that could happen
before I whisper
I love you
the universe sang tonight
I can't explain the sound
somewhere between needing sleep
and craving dark chocolate
I yearned for you more
fear is an invasive beast
shameless and reckless
but then media hype cares not
for the sensitive in a harsh world

Per usual, a very tender write.

I like the three words italicized

Global war approaches

It really creates discomfort in the reader, which is later juxtaposed with other three words

I love you

That is why I think this poem should end with

I love you (also italicized to make the connection).

I would throw out these two lines

but then media hype cares not
for the sensitive in a harsh world

It's a bit editorial, imo, and the "global war approaches" really encapsulates the fear mongering of the media.

That's just me though.

I like the setting . Global war approaches but all the narrator is thinking about is much more intimate and small, like a kiss or chocolate.

And naturally, love Portishead!

Kelly, you are a gem, thanks sweetheart xo
If only the world could go back to a simpler time before the fear mongering reared its ugly head and life was a lit sweeter.

Technology is a monster if manufactured with evil in mind. I often long for the old days of books, home phones and tv's with antennas.

Nice, Poppy... Social media, the news, hell... Your best friend with a smartphone... Between all this, and explosions orchestrated by the rich... We live in a time when the line is barely blurred between hate and love... So best to eat chocolate and return to bed... Smartly penned...

Poignant to the nth degree. The old Chinese curse I would modify after reading this. May you love in interesting times. I think that might just save us.
Wonderful.

A beautiful flow, I had to read it a couple times before coming up with a decent review. I never ended up coming up with one, so that's all I can really say. Absolutely beautiful.
