Shaped By Time

Shaped By Time

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver
"

“Meanwhile in my head, I’m undergoing open-heart surgery.” Anne Sexton

"

I sit looking at a piece of rock
that was brought home from the ocean
though quartz has naturally been etched into it
by Mother Nature's ebbs and flows
I remain unmoved by its energy
until this point in my surreal life
such things have always moved my soul
now natural beauty of the world seems tainted
for I hear the drums beat louder every second
war cries viscerally screamed by the hour
children seem more lost than ever
adults function on auto pilot
simply to survive another day
we have dissolved into nothingness
yet we are everything in-between
we tread within a limbo of sorts
faith is weakened if not void
if this realm is illusion
where does that place our souls
in what seems an unforgiving cycle
the heart broods tonight
melancholy slithers ever closer
though swifts bring fractals of light
perhaps there are no saviours
shadows calculate
maybe there's only a pause
to reflect and recall
darkness woke long ago

Damn, Poppy, bringing the thunder and doom... I sat unmoved by its energy... Auto-pilot strife... Illusions and realm madness... Absolutely a captivating read... You always seem to capture the heart of turmoil almost nonchalantly, but vividly... Thrummingly penned...

Time goes in cycle when things stop making sense and then the reason start claiming back things. It happened before us and it will happen after us.

It will and I only hope the trauma that follows will heal in its own needed time ♥
Time and experience shapes us as a person. We grow with the experience we encounter.

It does, sometimes for the good and sometimes not, thanks pia :)
This is why we try. Not only for ourselves, but for those around us. Bit of ego gives a nudge.

So many shots of reality are unraveling here, but there is brilliance upon the wings of your pen - of that I am certain!

a sad lament. it does seem that life has crossed a regrettable line. has sucked the marrow from our souls. seems like the more advanced we become, the more lost we become. i like to believe that the good in us is still there but has been buried by rubble. you touch upon the now elusive solutions - a return to the simple beauty of nature and all it holds and teaches, and faith. a reprioritization of sorts. a renaissance or rebirth if you will ...

the 'good book' says it will wax worse and not end well.
nature has a way of revealing the past

Indeed it does wordman, thank you :)
well yes. in older days i used to just embrace nature, especially up in Vermont, during my innocent childhood days.
i saw beauty in lots of places...not so much in the city where i lived---but then the world became darker, beauty scarcer...or at least the enjoyment of it.
i remember 1962 walking home from school...nice scenery surrounded me, but all i thought of were missiles...and wondering whether i would make it to the shelter of home...which i know now was no shelter from that danger.
the world is so tainted ethically, morally and such, nature just cries for us---i believe.

It seems like a luck thing at times...or maybe even luck is fated in some ways, thanks Andrew :)

Could only listen to three bars of the video before feeling the dread in your poem, Poppy. The world is wearing a dark, dark overcoat, isn't it. One disaster after another, tis hard, so hard to smile freely, the think and dream without starts of fear.

Your words as always hit spots that other writers aren't even aware of. Your writing is... simply, complexly brilliant.
