Water's Rise

Water's Rise

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver

I have always wanted to be a bird...

Tell me
soft herons
if I may call you such
what sights you have seen
on your way to that lake
I wonder if monsoon rain
beat heavily upon your broad wings
or the sun scorched your glides
as you soared toward fresh water
tell me
in your own unique way
how the sunrise glows in India
from here it seems to sear
I miss the home of my soul
have you seen the one who often walks
where you choose to land and hunt
the one who cherishes the beauty of nature
in sunshine or storm
tell me
soft herons
what sights you have seen
in the land of my dreams
I have always wanted to be a bird
perhaps more so now than ever before
to take flight and never return
to forever dwell
where the sky seems to burn

LOVE-LOVE-LOVE!!! This is gracefully stated & beautifully conceived. I love the longing thru-out, as if dripping from your words, wanting to be a bird. The observations are carefully chosen to show a side of this bird life that's nicely uncommon. I've been wanting to write as if a frog lately & your poem helps me formulate my ideas on this! *smile*

We often want to fly away, drifting peacefully in the sky. Seeing the far away. You shared that dream.

Many thanks Jon :)
Your words have soared higher than high, Poppy. They truly are the most beautiful and poetically laid emotions. Plus, the photograph is near ethereal... Sighhh.

Thank you beautiful xx
I like the visuals you conjour in this Poppy. The heron has always been from childhood one of my favourite birds.
It is the gentleness of far away I feel more than anything in this. A lovely piece.

That gentleness of far away, indeed Ken, many thanks :)
beautiful imagery. I especially like the rhythm and flow of the write. This added to the feeling of freedom, loneliness and yes, even fear that all birds must feel while in flight waiting to discover what's in store for them when they land. Well done Poppy.

Love this. I've always wanted to experience the feeling of being a bird. Flying free and high. I actually have like 3 bird related tattoos. Keep up the great work!!

Awesome! Thank you for your kind thoughts KBW :)
I guess we all reach that space where we desire to depart and never return again. Birds soar above it all, and I think we long to soar the same. Beautiful!

I think so too...many thanks Linda, much appreciated :)
Sad. Kind of reminds me of hiraeth, but this feels like a longing (in some shape) for a place (in some way) that you simply can't reach.

I think it is a very human thing to feel a deep attachment to a place you've never been to--or, even more, to a place you've been to, but can't return to. A quizzical, and potent, feeling.

Thank you M.R...your lovely thoughts are much appreciated :)
Poppy, this poem is awe inspiring... there are so many really wonderful lines and images to savor... I really like the "soft heron", saying these words create scenes of flying, and soaring gracefully... while in Florida not long ago, I was close to a pond that you could see out the window and many time I would sit amazed at the few blue herons glided along the shallow water, looking for supper... it was a very calming sight at a time when there was much tension and worry...

one of my totems is that of a hawk, it soars gracefully as well but is more warrior than the soft heron.. I mention this because I sometimes dream of flying, of soaring through the clouds and to far away places and your desire to soar to India is something I can understand and appreciate... these visions are special Poppy, beside giving rise to poetry like you have written...
