Bhagirathi - Who will bring her back

Bhagirathi - Who will bring her back

A Poem by Poppy Ruth Silver
"

This is a spoken word poem and animation project, the link to the video is in the review notes below and at the end of the poem ~ a project to create thought into how we will save our rivers...

"

In times forgotten
Sagara was the mightiest King
to prove he did yagya called ashwamedha
he released the horse to claim all lands
nobody would stop him or they'd lose their hands
until it was stolen by Indra the deceiver
Sagara was furious looking for its captor
he called a thousand sons to ravage every corner
forests were chopped, mountains razed
lands made barren, no animals nor rain
the carnage went on 'til the last drop was gone
but they met their fate, turned to ashes
souls in flames by a Saint not allowed to meditate
everything dried, tears did not come when children cried
death was the only home
Bhagirath knew the sins of his Fathers
penanced them to Brahma, the Creator
Only Ganga, river from heaven
can save the earthen
but earth is weak
Shiva's help you should seek
so Shiva asked her to fall on his head and closed his locks
she feel slow, flowed to mountains and rocks
bringing life
seeds and saplings
quenching the living
redeeming the dead
he called her Bhagirathi, they say
human greed has made her diseased
chances of suvival are bleak
now whose help should we seek?

I'll check out your video later . . . for now, just let me say how much I learn from your writing! I wonder if you know all these things as a matter of curiosity thru-out your life, or if you research such a poem as this, where many interesting & unusual cultural references are described with good detail? I admire your interest in a great array of things beyond the usual poetic topics & for bringing them to us in an understandable way.

I wonder if last word line 9 might be "razed"?

I just checked out your video . . . very impressed! I'm not a big fan of oral poetry, but your presentation did wonders to enhance the story! Awesome share!

The woes of our time are reflected here
direct correlation is drawn as I read it,
will mother nature be able to recover it in the future?
My hope remains with her and these thoughts here.

It connects to mythologies rarely connected to souls now in places where its seeds were sown...loved that it brings blossoms in a far away place....and I hear the stream flowing through ages to the pyre set upon the shore....once where those thousands princes were burnt....and I see myself agreeing in finding very bleak chances of survival....while agreeing although that the tryst to death is always an inescapable certainty for life to survive in its cycle of phase and transformation....the spirit undyingly changing cages through refinement....she must be lucky to get back to upper home also much quicker than the Lord granted her to serve...the greed is all...not only the human greed...the heaven was (is, if there be still any) not even free from its clutches...reminds me of a few lines from "Demons" by Imagine Dragons..."No matter what we breed...We still are made of greed"....so we are destined to ruin ourselves...yet, knowing the greed and feeling bad about it is something that we truly need to become a litter better inside...a litter brighter inside...a litter wise insider....that is much inspiring in it and the poetic contents made such a hard reality much touching in its flow...best wishes

A wonderful poem dear Poppy. I love the story of other places. Each filled with legend and wisdom to be learned. This story took me to new places and left me with something to think about. Thank you for sharing the amazing words and story.
