I listen but wonder this: are most people in a state of suffering? I suspect not, but I do not know. Most seem to find some sort of balance instinctively and that humour is the oil that makes the jagged parts of our lives function the better. I do not think desire necessarily leads to suffering. Hmm. I wonder.

I cannot speak for most people but I have my suspicion that most people in the modern world are almost constantly suffering ... except when they eat, drink, consume narcotics and sleep. They do not know it because it has been so long since they have known any other way. For example ... worry is suffering. It is hard on the mind and body. But most go about in worry much of the day ... or watch the news and that worry becomes out-right fear. If you do not suffer ... that is great ... but listen in to your thoughts ... listen in to the way other's talk. You may shift your perspective. Take a look at the semblance on the faces you pass in the street ... what do you see?

It is true there is a lot of suffering. But there is also a lot of kindness. And we can add to that kindness in small ways. Just being cheerful helps. I know several Mr Blue Sky personalities. And it is not to do with wealth or success. Some of us are just gloomy others are cheerful. I see both sorts around me all the time. I don't know if there is as much kindness in the world as there is suffering. But there is certainly kindness and the world is not all suffering. Nor do people who suffer suffer all the time. It is true that many behave in ways that are not good. But when I look around I see that life is generally improving. Yes there are new problems. But there are new solutions, too. And we have no assurance of continued existence as a species, unless perhaps we use our greatest asset, our collective intelligence and active thinking.

I agree with you on so many counts. Meditation allows one to choose kindness and happiness more often. Allows one to be less situationally happy and more just happy. I promote awareness and happiness ... not a negative view of the world. They are mutually exclusive endeavours:):):)

Here here to that. I would add that reading great literature is another way to spiritual nourishment. Near midnight here in the UK when we go crazy and throw our clocks forwards an hour - something that definitely causes sleep deprivation and widespread suffering to the populace of these islands.

the lessons of balance ... always necessary and so easily ignored ... sigh! lots of negative sprouts from the "wanting" ... it can be instant and sometimes horrific ....to find our "place" in the Universe and accept it ... and generate goodness isn't possible without the "letting go' of over-energetic desire ... ohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! ;) great voice Lotus Flower!

lol,i still have a couple abbs,it seems suffering and happiness just goes together,cant really have one without experiencing the other

Yes you can have suffering without happiness ... lol:) So why can't you have happiness without suffering ... the mind is not dualistic ... it is relative:) Master the mind and you can have anything you want ... or so I am told:)
