Summers Let Down

Summers Let Down

A Poem by Rachael Lea
"

The death of a season

"

As I walked through the forest one day

I witnessed summer, down she lay

“my days are numbered, my soul at rest”

She confided to me which days were her best

The joy that shown in her beautiful bright face

At having me with her was my only saving grace

I comforted her gently as I ran my hands over the sharp green blades of grass

Already mourning for her as I knew she was soon to pass

Breathing in her sweet but no longer succulent fragrance

As we listened to nature play a song of absolute radiance

As I walked through the forest one day

I witnessed summer, down she lay

Her voice trembling as she told me of the children

And how she loved helping with each individual creation

She loved so much and so many during her short time with us

Reminding me of the good in life and how we all need to adjust

She whispered my name looking deep into my eyes

Telling me it’s time for me to drop my disguise

She’d been watching me with a knowledge so deep and so true

She knew my love for her and whispered a barely audible “I love you”

As my tears started falling I witnessed summer, down she lay

She slowly closed her eyes, she had said all that she could say

Bringing a grief so hard for me to bare I made a promise to summer that day

I promised summer I’d try and as I turned to go my guise I left to stay

For summer had loved me for who I was and finally it was time for me to do the same

Life is what you make it, so please stay true to your name

As I walked through the forest a day not long ago

I witnessed summer, down she lay

The death of summer bringing the birth of autumn/fall. This is gorgeous, a personal and beautiful conversation between you and summer, told in the faintest whisper, like a secret you hold dear. Love the imagery this one brings to mind, of laying down with summer and feeling it's true nature and knowing you belong within each delicious word shared.
The topic itself leads itself to an air of sadness, but knowledge that it will return o you again one day.
Beautiful.
