Anyone else need cheering up? [just for fun]

A Chapter by Raef C. Boylan
"

I can't be the only one...haha...

"

I’m yet to find anyone else who believes that, when it comes to songs, lyrics are more important than the music [the music needs to be good too, obviously – but if the album sleeve reads like interesting poetry, I get excited].

I don’t sing along to lyrics that I don’t understand or agree with, and I always do my best to work out what they’re supposed to mean.

So it’s kind of strange that I mishear more lyrics than anyone I know; mostly stuff that doesn’t come with an album sleeve/ crap on the radio that I’m barely listening to, so I guess it’s partly excusable [although sometimes the song’s namesake line is the one I get wrong, and that’s pretty bad].

No one cared when I was a kid, but as I’ve got older I’ve come to realise the entertainment value this habit sometimes provides.

Below, are just a few of mine.

If you have any funny ones, please share them. I could use a laugh.

Bob Marley – ‘I Shot the Sheriff’ [aged about 4]

What I heard: “I got the sherry”

Real words: “I shot the sheriff”

Robson & Jerome’s cover of ‘Up On the Roof’ [aged about 7]

What I heard: “Hop bong a roo”

Real words: “Up on the roof”

Alanis Morissette – ‘R U Still Mad’ [aged about 13]

What I heard: “Are you still mad I gave you old tomatoes?”

Real words: “Are you still mad I gave you ultimatums?”

Metallica – ‘Ain’t My B*tch’ [aged about 15]

What I heard: “It ain’t my bath time”

Real words: “You ain’t my B*tch”

Nirvana – ‘School’ [aged about 16]

What I heard: “No re-sits”

Real words: “No recess”

Kaiser Chiefs – ‘I Predict a Riot’ [aged about 19]

What I heard: “I could get Tourettes”

Real words: “I predict a riot”

To me both the music and lyrics come together to tell a story. Being a part of a song-writing team I find that sometimes musicians are more interested in the math behind the music than the story that lyrics tell. I have run into many wonderful musicians whose music was incredible, with many instruments added and beautiful sounds, and then the lyrics are AWFUL and it ruins it for me....it is not always an easy thing to do and I am always impressed by those who can perform, write and create their own music.

I got a kick out of this though, we are all guilty of it...LOL funny:)

Between this and your video on Id's, you have me laughing and falling out of my chair. It seems
I do this still, thank goodness bands list the words for us to read!

I am going to save some other work of yours for another time, but this was good.

Ok, I loved the ones you posted, especially the first one. I got one for ya, not sure if it's silly or funny, or whatever, but I know ALL lyrics to just about every single Garth Brooks song, or so I thought, and the one that always gets me is this line from "When you come back to me again"

I thought he said, Rage and Doubt, Against the Wind
He actually says: Oh, raining down, against the wind.

Probably not very interesting, but I've got writers block, so I'm just surfing and thought I'd comment

Creedance (God bless John Fogerty's slur...)

What I heard: "There's a bathroom on the right."
Actual lyrics: "There's a bad moon on the rise."

What can I say? Man, I guess I just heard that song when I needed to take a piss. Good little post.

Some lyrics transcend the music (think "Imagine") but I'm not sure that that's ever a good thing. Surely, the music and words should be complimentary, heighten the delivery of the whole? What do I know? But I got a huge giggle out of your list and, yes, I've had songs where I completely misunderstand the lyrics. I grew up when a song called "Louie, Louie" was popular but I wasn't the only one who misunderstood it. Even the FCC got involved because it was sung so sloppily that everyone was convinced it contained dirty words. I heard "Louie, Louway, oh whoa way down low." Real lyrics: "Louie, Louie, me gotta go."

No this isn't too My-Spacey, Now if you start wanting to compare tats...

I thought this was just too funny.
Certainly made me smile :D
But I don't sing-a-long to lyrics, I don't agree/understand
either, just isn't my thing.

Yes, we are all guilty of this, lol.

Funny. I do the same thing. Various country songs that you probably wouldn't know. People come and read our poetry and say, "It means," obviously they never really know what they're talking about. I think it's similar. We read/sing/hear it the way we want to. . .
