We Tried, Dear

We Tried, Dear

A Poem by Nicholas Antonio Young

Oh my dear, it was so simple wasn't it?

Yet we breathed life into complications

These tiny fragments of imagination

Growing from our minds like horns of demons

Aliens of what was and born into what is

Corrupting and poisoning what lives

Inside our souls it's different

Love plants a seed and grows,

wrapped around our hearts like halos of angels

Like fables where only dreams reside

Where we all live forever and never die

Except it's not a lie

We both fell in

And it was perfect

We basked in it

But fear sank in and we scrambled for an exit

You for your reasons and me for mine

We closed our eyes because it got too bright

And God, did we shine

Our two hearts were like a star

And like all stars

We died.

This was, in a word, exquisite. It made me want to cry because you so perfectly described a relationship that's going well, then people get scared and it crumbles. Its beautiful and melancholy and absolutely amazing, one of my favorite poems EVER! The ending had to take the cake for me:

"But fear sank in and we scrambled for an exit
You for your reasons and me for mine
We closed our eyes because it got too bright
And God, did we shine
Our two hearts were like a star
And like all stars
We died."

And God, did we shine. I can just hear that in my head, the softly deceiving laugh a you recount old heartbreak. Amazing. Okay I'll stop ranting now haha. Brilliant piece. It filled my heart then broke it in one swift motion. Well done!
God bless.
