didn't we...

didn't we...

A Poem by Rain
"

thoughts of love and life in california in the late 60's

"
didn't we laugh
didn't we run like a couple kids
didn't we dream it would last forever
those days of dark skin from the burning california sun
old red vw..and faded jeans and trips to the mountains
to watch the sunset
laughing friends everywhere
we would change the world...we would lead the way
we were warriors in love...we filled the air with music
didn't we..

we played in the rain
we were new
how could they be so blind
how could they not hear us
those days of flowers in our hair
didn't we yell loud enough
how did we slip away
where did we go
memories of playgrounds
houses filled with so many dreams
and us
there would always be us...always

we were young and on fire
the world was ours...we owned the heavens
didn't we
somehow the winds changed...we changed
doesn't anything good last..
those days...
that beautiful time when everything was new
when everything was possible
gone...gone...gone
where did we go
how did we become a memory of another time
still...we danced and laughed and loved
didn't we...

Yes.....the "unstoppables " we were ...

I feel really blessed to have been a part of those times...
we were selfless.... we wanted to run away and join the peace corps.....or Green peace
I felt ... "FREE" back then ...
We lived "outside" - the box ...we knew our neighbors...we helped strangers...
we acknowledged others walking opposite us in hallways at work, school...and down sidewalks

the days of....

" steal this book'
"Burn that bra"
" stop that war"
" love the one you're with"

..... The seven words you couldnt say on radio or t.v....( remember them)

we were...
"Hair"
"Woodstock"
we ..." sat-in" for peace...
and ... " stood-up" for rights

we gave up everything to acheive something for someone else
not for ourselves

yes we were unstoppables

Loved...this Ray

Blesssssssssssssssssss

::::: pumping my fist with love-beads and dashiki and on and insence burning ::::

Sweet memories!! They make us smile and cry. I guess it's what we need to pass our lonely moments.

I read this and remembered those days well. What I question more these days is what legacy will we leave behind. Still a great nastalgic piece.

What a wonderful description of a longgg, slowww MOMENT in time when the brief phrase! 'Make love, not war' was like a anthem !

'we were young and on fire ...the world was ours...we owned the heavens... didn't we' - what truth... so different from today when kids walk into a building and fire like the devil holds the gun.

Surely you never really lose those feelings; if you were part of that, doesn't it always stay with you, part of what makes today's you you?

Great words, and, finally formatted.

I was mesmerized by this !
how did we become a memory of another time
still...we danced and laughed and loved
didn't we...
This may not be so long back in time and yet suddenly the magic spills out and you have to refer to what "was " instead of " is"
didn't we dream it would last forever
and yet it doesn't

This was so innocently written. Beautiful! It reminded me of a whirlwhind relationship I once had. I've forgotten about all the negative things in the relationship and remember dancing to Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam in his living room like we were the only two souls on earth. Great poem to remember great times!

You convey the wistfulness, without being maudlin. You're imagery is of carefree times when one is not weighted down by the everyday stresses of working, raising a family and putting a roof over their heads. But people will lose so much more than that if they let apathy get in the way. We need to remember that strength we felt back then and claim it as ours again. Excellent poem! Barbara

I love the nostalgic feel to this poem, Ray. Memories are precious and you've captured so many emotions with your words. Beautifully done.

This is a dope, dope remembrance of those times when you had a little more courage; a little more passion; a little more....love.

Got me over here likening you to Ice Cube when he wrote "Today Was a Good Day".

Excellent write.
